There are plenty of tools that help you track a keyword mentions either for reputation management or for keyword research. But you know what, if you want something done well, you better do it yourself. So here’s a quick tutorial on creating your own keyword tracking master feed:

Step One: Collect the Sources

For this experimental master feed, I am combining 4 sources (you can combine as many as you need). I will also be using my moniker for tracking – just because it has few results (as compared to a general key phrase), so it will be easier to demonstrate how things work (but likewise, you can create a master feed for any key term you are targeting or trend you are interested in):

1. Google Blog search feed:

Go to Google blog search;

Search for the key term;

Grab the feed of the search results:

2. Google News Feed:

Go to Google news search;

Search for the key term;

Grab the feed of the search results (bottom of the page):

3. Twitter Search Feed:

Go to Twitter search;

Search for the key term;

Grab the feed of the search results:

{Note: my key term in this case is the same as my Twitter username, so I am filtering my own Tweets out: seosmarty -from:seosmarty}

4. Digg Search Feed

Go to Digg;

Search for the key term;

Grab the feed of the search results:

{Note: you can track only popular stories, for that include +p in the search query.}

Step 2: Create a Master Feed

Go to Yahoo! Pipes and combine all three feeds in three:

1. Name your Pipe: Click on tab in the top left corner which says "Untitled" and provide your name;

2. Provide your feed URLs: click on "Fetch feed" pipe in "Sources" and drag it into the dashboard. Then copy-paste your first feed address. If everything is fine, you will be able to see the feed preview in the debugger window at the bottom of the screen:

Now, click on + next to "URL" in the "Fetch feed" pipe and add all your feeds:

3. (!) Filter duplicate entries. Because you combine several feeds, chances are there are many identical URLs in a few of them. You don’t want those duplicates to trash your feed and you have the power to filter them away (and that’s the beauty of it!).

You have two options to do that: one is simpler, while the other one is more complicated. Let’s start with an easier one:

(a) Open the "Operators" and drag the "Unique" Pipe into your dashboard;

(b) Configure it to filter out duplicate titles;

(c) Link all the pipes so that the Output Pipe were the last one:

FYI:

"Unique" module removes items that contain duplicate strings. You select the element to filter on, and Unique removes the duplicates – if the original feed has five items with the same title, you can configure Unique so only one of these items is included in the output feed.

This should be enough in most cases. But it is not enough for the cases where you are using Twitter search feed because your feed will be trashed with multiple RTs which do have (slightly) different titles.

You may want to keep them (to know who is retweeting you) or you may want to filter those out, and here’s where our Advanced filtering method comes in handy:

(a) Go to "Deprecated" and drag in "Content Analysis" pipe;

(b) Insert it before "Unique" pipe and link them through;

(c) In "Unique" pipe choose "item.y:content_analysis" as the filtering criteria;

(d) Link all the pipes, click on "Output" and refresh the debugger results:. You will see that filtering is *a bit* smarter now (still not perfect, probably because this module I used to love so much has been deprecated but it is still in use):

FYI:

Content Analysis Module: analyzes each item in an RSS feed and tries to find the most significant few words within it. A new y:content_analysis element is added to the output feed. For example, a news feed with a headline like "Pioneering treatment for brain cancer gets Swiss approval" may get a y:content_analysis value of "brain cancer". An item titled "FDA approves patch to treat dementia" may yield a y:content_analysis of simply "dementia".

Alternative / similar module that can be used here: Term Extractor module

4. Sort the results by date.

Naturally, you want to see the newest results first. So drag "Sort" from the Operators toolbar, link it through with all the pipes before the output and set it to sort results by date (depends on your chosen feeds formats):

In the past, Google Docs would let you export a single doc at a time, but Google Operating System runs down exactly how to batch export your Google Docs. For each type of document (text document, presentation, spreadsheet, etc.) you can choose what file format to get.

I had about 81 personal docs (~13MB) and it only took about a minute to bundle the files up into a .zip file that my browser automatically downloaded. If you have a ton of files, you can choose to get an email when the .zip file is ready.

I really like this feature. By making it easy to leave Google, I think people are actually less likely to leave Google. Or as Jason Calacanis noted lots of people are happy just to get a backup.

By the way, read more about how Google lets you export your data at http://www.dataliberation.org/ if you’re interested.

What an opportune time for Google to launch another business enteprise solution geared for big e-commerce site than right now? Just in time for the onset of the holiday shopping season Google unveiled Commerce Search. Think of it as a the Custom Search Engine for e-commerce sites, big commerce sites to be exact.

Google Commerce Search aims to make the otherwise cumbersome task of searching for products on e-commerce sites easier and more fun, a post from the Official Google Blog said.

In brief the Google Commerce Search has the following features:

the same lightning fast Google searching technology applied to retailers databases enabling consumers to find the right products in a snap,

a scalable hosted solution that aims to increase seasonal query volume

search refinement functionality that can automatically generate groupings based on user query and matching items,

easily manageable product promotions that provides complete control to marketers and e-commerce site administrators

full customization option for controling how products are displayed on search results landing pages

no additional admistrative cost for deployment and maintenance

customized reporting and statistical analysis via integrated Google Analytics

Finally, pricing scheme for Google Commerce Search will depend on the number of products/items on businesses’ data feed and search queries.

As Google has looked to increase revenues and move beyond being “just a search engine” they have put themselves at the top of the food chain in multiple categories. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely, etc.

If you search for books their book search is the result in natural search and when you search for movies they push their iGoogle application in paid search. Every holiday season Google tries to make further inroads in ecommerce by doing things like offering free Checkout services (at launch of Google Checkout), integrating Google Checkout with AdWords ads (and claiming this increases ad CTR by ~ 10%), and promoting Google Base / Google Product Search more aggressively in their navigation and organic search results. Some early Google Checkout users also got free links.

As Google dives into music services a new one-box with links to selected partners will appear at the top of the search results. And as Google makes tie-ins with more software providers you can look for Google to promote Google pack and other such offerings across the spectrum of search results.

Google has tested creating a mortgage marketplace in the UK and LendingTree is suing a business partner because they heard that the company might sell data to Google.

Everything is a beta and everything is a test. And then one day a new competitor appears from nowhere.

At times Google seems unbelievably savvy, but at times they seem unbelievably conflicted. Google claims that searchers are expecting more for advertisers and that advertisers need to start acting more like magazine publishers who publish (and advertise) great featured content. Sounds good, maybe. But then Google launches an AdWords ad translation kit. It is pretty safe to say that if a machine translates your ads in a competitive marketplace you are wasting an awful lot of profit margin.

Google claims to like brands, that brands are how you sort out the cesspool, and to show brands for generic keywords to increase user satisfaction.

But lets look at a recent search result for the eBay brand. Google knows that eBay.com gets a 90%+++ CTR, that the keyword is a trademark, that the keyword is navigational, etc etc etc. And in spite of eBay even bidding on their own brand, this is perhaps the first time Google takes a valuable partner hostage.

If Google claims that they need to show brands on generic search queries to increase user satisfaction then why do they pollute the associated brand search results with irrelevant nonsense? Navigational searches are the easiest ones in the world to get right, and if a site has historically got a 90%+++ click-through rate for a keyword, why would it ever make sense to risk putting a universal search result or a marginally relevant ad above the obvious #1 result?

If people are looking specifically for news when entering a branded 1 word trademarked keyword then surely they would skip past the #1 result for the official site. Sure there is money in promoting apps for eBay, but it seems so counter to Google’s messaging when justifying their algorithmic editorial philosophy elsewhere.

If you can’t rank for a specific keyword it is worth looking at the composition of the search results and seeing if Google is localizing it to another region. Yet another reason to have a multi-domain strategy if you are targeting many markets.

Marissa Mayer announces that Google has reached an agreement with Twitter to include Twitter updates in Google’s search results.

We look forward to having a product that showcases how tweets can make search better in the coming months. That way, the next time you search for something that can be aided by a real-time observation, say, snow conditions at your favorite ski resort, you’ll find tweets from other users who are there and sharing the latest and greatest information.

Hmmm…”product”? Obviously something a bit smarter that simply providing raw indexing and display.

This move follows Bing’s recent announcement – today, in fact – they would do likewise.

We’re glad you asked that. Because today at Web 2.0 we announced that working with those clever birds over at Twitter, we now have access to the entire public Twitter feed and have a beta of Bing Twitter search for you to play with (in the US, for now). Try it out. The Bing and Twitter teams want to know what you think.

Microsoft has pulled off a similar deal with Facebook, which has six times as many users as Twitter.

With two competing deep pocketed players signing up, how long can Twitter remain unsold? Will Google build a competing version of Twitter? Much easier to crunch link data and index in real time if you can backend updates with your own systems, rather than making sense of third-party date, like Twitter, which is probably a nightmare. Some cosy integration arrangement is probably part of the deal, of course.

Read-Write-Web made the valid point that Google grew when they signed a similar deal with Yahoo. Now Twitter is doing likewise, serving their stuff to Google’s massive audience. However, given Twitters notorious fail-whale flakiness, it remains to be seen if their system is ready for the roar of traffic that will soon come their way.

What Does This Mean For SEOs?

Go where the search engines do. Link to your content from Twitter. Publish excerpts and link-backs. Monitor real-time search trends, using Google’s Hot Trends and trend data tools, such as TweetStats. Supply content to match demand.

It will be interesting to see if real-time search, on a Google scale, produces new business models. The traffic bursts should ample reward for being seen first for popular real time queries.

The news business relies on immediacy, and they just got a whole new wave of unpaid competition.

how to make money online without paying

I thought it was best i posted this quite early on because its extremely likely i am going to get a lot of people who are new to affiliate marketing reading my blog and searching in google for how to Make Money Online.

Please do not do what i did!

For Example: Google Search: “Make Money Online” , Look at how many results and products are out there all after your goal of making money online!

i bought everything going at first! i was swept in with the whole OMG! Wow! i am going to make money in my sleep and become rich online!

Yes you may, if you sat down and followed one of those products for months and put alot of time and effort into it, a load of them are just scams with rubbish quality information about making money online.

Please remember this quote it applies very well to internet marketing ” Slow and steady wins the race” , You may not become rich overnight but if you work hard over time and follow the right course then i promise you! You are going to make money online!

The one i am following in my quest to make money online is Wealthy Affiliate University; it costs $39 a month and contains some great courses and videos to how to get started and what to do!

The best part about it i feel is the excellent community with your own MySpace/facebook style profile and a jam packed forum full of story’s , experiences and tips, i am connecting with some great people on there as well as learning loads.

It’s not all about the learning! You need to also get things done! read and do!

I wish you all the best with whatever course or money making info product you decide to follow
